Kaplan residents asked to complete survey about lead water pipes

KAPLAN, La. (KLFY) -- Residents and businesses in the City of Kaplan are being asked to help eradicate lead pipes from the city's water supply.

According to a Facebook post by Kaplan Mayor Mike Kloesel, the Louisiana Department of Health is conducting a survey to find out if any lead pipes are found in any part of the city's water distribution system.

"You should have received a letter from the city recently about this survey," Kloesel said. "It is a gathering of information that we need to complete the identification of service lines to your residence. Please fill it out either online or send it in to city hall at your earliest convenience."

The LDH's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program calls lead poisoning "a serious but preventable health problem."

"Even small amounts of lead can cause learning and behavior problems in children," LDH said. "At very high blood levels lead poisoning can be fatal."

LDH has required that all water service providers in Louisiana identify the exact type of service lines that are furnishing water to your business or residence, Kloesel said.

"Most homes in our town are either connected from the home to the service line, by plastic (PVC), PE tubing, Copper, Galvanized and in rare cases, possibly lead," Kloesel said. "If your home is more than 60 years old you will want to make sure that if there ever were any lead pipes connecting your water service that they have been replaced."
