Monterey County is one of the most varied hiking destinations in California with a mix of trails, vistas and natural environments for every kind of hiker. Whether you’re a coastal peak-bagger, a forest wanderer through towering pines or just want a flat, scenic walk with ocean views, there’s a trail for you.
We asked two longtime locals — each with a deep connection to Monterey County’s trails — to share their favorite hikes. Want a beach stroll? Done. Prefer a woodsy wander? Check. Looking for a trail that will reward you with sweeping vistas? Monterey has that, too.

Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail
Distance: 2 miles (Old Fisherman’s Wharf to Lovers Point)
Trailhead: Start at Old Fisherman’s Wharf (parking at 245 Washington St., Monterey)
Soak in Monterey’s coastal beauty without breaking a sweat. While this trail extends 18 miles from Pacific Grove to Castroville, the 2-mile stretch from Old Fisherman’s Wharf to Lovers Point is paved, flat and ideal for wheelchairs, strollers and anyone who enjoys a leisurely pace.
Along the way, you’ll pass postcard-worthy sights: boats bobbing in the marina, otters floating on their backs and the occasional v-formation of pelicans swooping past. Historically, this area was all about fishing and canneries, and for those in the mood for local history, the Pacific House Museum near the wharf offers local lore.
