House for a Pianist
House for a Pianist is a minimalist home located in Rome, Italy, designed by SET Architects. The residence, located on the fourth floor of a late 19th-century building, embodies a blend of classic and contemporary elements suited to the evolving character of one of Rome’s most dynamic neighborhoods. The project began with a client request from a pianist and his family, who sought to reimagine the traditionally compartmentalized layout of sequential rooms and corridors into a more open, versatile living space that would retain a sense of the apartment’s original identity.
SET architects responded with a design strategy centered around dark walnut wood, used consistently throughout as a unifying element. This material choice anchors the apartment’s aesthetic, integrating custom furnishings, including wardrobes, paneling, cabinetry in the kitchen and bathrooms, and more, all tailored to the family’s needs. Dark walnut introduces a classical warmth, while the contrast of light oak parquet flooring and white walls brightens the overall ambiance, striking a balance between classic elegance and modern simplicity.
