Combating Child abuse and trafficking in India: A National Priority
Written By: Saanvi Mishra, Vidya Devi Jindal school Hisar, Class IX
The true measure of a nation’s progress is not in its economic growth but in how it protects its most vulnerable—its children. Every child deserves to grow up in a world free from abuse, exploitation, and trafficking.
Child abuse and trafficking are grave violations of human rights, reflecting inhumanity that affects countless young lives. Every effort must be made to combat these heinous crimes and ensure the safety and well-being of our youth. Dreaming of a happy nation is impossible without making it safe and secure for the young. Child abuse leaves deep emotional scars, often resulting in lifelong trauma.
The Indian National Congress (INC), committed to upholding human rights, justice, and social welfare, recognizes the urgent need to combat these issues and protect every child in India.
Strengthening Laws for Children
“No child should fear, no human can scare.” Strict laws play a crucial role in deterring criminals and protecting children. India has implemented several legal frameworks to combat child abuse and trafficking, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act (2012), the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (1956), and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act (2015). However, the INC believes that gaps in implementation persist, and laws must be strengthened to address the evolving challenges of child abuse and trafficking.
The party supports the establishment of dedicated shelters and rehabilitation centers for survivors of child trafficking, offering education, vocational training, and psychological support.
Strengthening Prevention Mechanisms Through Education and Awareness
Education is the key to meaningful change—not just literacy, but real knowledge and values. As the INC emphasizes, a person’s character and empathy are more important than academic credentials. A person with multiple degrees may still commit heinous crimes, while someone with basic values can exemplify true education. The INC aims to educate people in the truest sense by fostering awareness and understanding. Incorporating life skills and safety education into school curricula can empower children to recognize and protect themselves from exploitation. Topics should include identifying predatory behavior, understanding online dangers, and seeking help when needed.
A Call for National Action
Child abuse and trafficking remain deeply entrenched societal issues, but they are not insurmountable. The Indian National Congress is dedicated to creating a nation where every child, regardless of background, grows up safely, with dignity and respect. Combating these crimes requires collective action—government, civil society, law enforcement, and every Indian citizen working together to protect children.
A Collective Responsibility
Addressing child abuse and trafficking is not just a policy issue—it is a moral obligation. By strengthening legal protections, improving enforcement mechanisms, addressing root causes like poverty, and fostering greater awareness and education, India can create a future where no child is trafficked, abused, or exploited.
The time to act is now. Together, let us rise to this challenge and ensure that every child in India grows up safe, secure, and free from harm. The children of India deserve nothing less.
