MCAL unveils all-league selections for most fall sports

0

The MCAL released a slew of all-league lists on Sunday night, highlighted by six athletes being honored as their sport’s player of the year.

Branson had two players of the year in Elena Fisher (girls volleyball) and Elizabeth Liu (girls golf). Redwood’s Jordan Marotto was named the girls tennis player of the year. Archie Williams’ Jake Carerra was the pick for boys water polo while Gabby Reichley of Marin Academy was selected in girls water polo. University’s Scarlett Carpenter was the pick for field hockey.

Liu was named girls golfer of the year for the third consecutive season while Marotto and Carrera were both selected for the second consecutive year.

Football is now a Redwood Empire Conference sport and those selections are expected to be made this week.

Girls volleyball

Two of Fisher’s senior teammates, libero Lauren Dignan and setter Celia Tolmie, were named first-team selections in a season where the Bulls went undefeated in the league campaign, adding the MCAL title and North Coast section Open championship.

Tam’s Natalia Clifford was also named to the first team. The Red-tailed Hawks won the NCS D-I title this season. The rest of the first team was comprised of Neeva Gaine (Redwood), Krystal Rose Huff (Marin Catholic), and Chloe Allcroft (MC). Redwood is still alive in the NorCal D-I tournament.

Boys water polo

League champion Archie Williams was well represented on the first team with Nate Greenberg and Vincent Krilanovich on the list. The Peregrine Falcons were undefeated in the league season, won the MCAL title, and are still alive in NorCals.

Redwood, which won the NCS D-I title and is also alive in NorCals, put three players on the team — goalie Owen Malone, plus Ossie Joplin and Sawyer Goldberg. Terra Linda’s Soren Jessen and Tam’s Reed Hanna were the other choices.

Girls water polo

Tam led the way with three players — goalie Nola Palestrant, plus Julia Ulvestad and Sabine Barringer — on the first team. Archie Williams went undefeated in the league campaign and placed Sylvie Fine on the first team. League champion Redwood is represented by Samantha Riley.

Newly minted NCS D-II champion MC placed Emma Slaught on the first team. MC remains alive in NorCals. Marin Academy’s Kelly Kurtzig was the other first-team selection.

Girls tennis

Redwood — which went undefeated during the league season, won the MCAL title, and is alive in NorCals — is represented by Julia Laury in singles and Ella Povio in doubles. Branson put four players on the list, with league champ Mirabel Arlander plus Katie Warrin in singles, plus Talia Schneiter in doubles.

Other singles players honored were Clare Zhu (San Marin), Maya Riisaard (Tam), and Georgia Compagno (MC). Other doubles players earning recognition were Aashna Selvaraj (San Marin), Amalie Stoker (Tam), Maria-Jose Staurt (Tam), and Payton Greco (MC).

Girls golf

League champion Redwood dominated the first-team selections, putting five players on the list — Taylor Bridges, Katherine Lim, Madeline Lim, Katelyn Van Dusen, and Chloe Branson. Sidney Kawahara of Branson was the only other player to make the cut.

Field hockey

Redwood secured its sixth consecutive league title and, as such, put a number of players on the first team with Lucy Jeffers, Claire Johnson, plus goalie Eva Layton.

Tam (Rowie Scobie, Emi Navesi), MC (Elsa Greene, Mattie Reale), and University (Whitney Froeb, Annabelle Vander Marck) all saw two players selected. Berkeley’s Greta Graham and Lick-Wilmerding’s Frankie Lemeiux rounded out the selections.
