Carencro family asks for public's help after losing their belongings in recent flood
CARENCRO, LA. (KLFY) - Jenna Swails says flood waters quickly rose in and around her family's home, causing them to lose most of their personal items. she says she and her family need help. We're starting over again, and we can't keep doing it, if we can afford to leave we would, but we can't," said Swails.
Swails says she and her family had to vacate their homes on their own as the waters continued to rise. Swails's mother, Jodie Broom, who lives with Swails, says the water was as high she and her daughter's waist, and was up to her granddaughter's chest. "The water comes in very quickly, knowing that this child, my oldest grandchild here to walk through water, chest high, is upsetting," said Broom.
Swails says she and her family lost nearly all of their personal belongings, including their clothes, furniture, and supplies. We don't have blankets, we don't have pillows or sheets for them, we don't have cleaning supplies to clean the mess," said Swails.
The water has receded since Wednesday, but the family says they are still cleaning up the mess left from the storm. swails says if she and her family did not evacuate in time, they could have died. "I wish the fire department was called, so they could walk with poles to mark out where the ditches are, my children could have drowned, one step the wrong way with the current," said Swails.
The family has set up a GoFundMe to help replace the items lost during the flood.
