PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A chain of automotive parts stores is shuttering hundreds of locations nationwide, including multiple shops in the Portland metro area.

On Thursday, Advance Auto Parts revealed it will close 523 corporate stores, 204 independent stores and four distribution centers in an effort to reduce its “U.S. asset footprint.”

A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification from the Higher Education Coordinating Commission shows nine Oregon shops are among those set to close.

According to the WARN Notice, 96 employees will be laid off. This includes general managers, salespeople and commercial parts workers. The permanent closures will occur from Feb. 23 to March 31, 2025.

This comes after the chain reported that its store sales dropped by 2.3% from the third quarter of 2023 to the same period this year.

“The company is executing a strategic plan to improve business performance with a focus on core retail improvements,” Advance Auto said in a release. “The company has identified opportunities that it believes can improve adjusted operating income margin by more than 500-basis points through fiscal 2027.”

The business plans listed “standardization of store operating model and improving labor productivity” as two parts of its strategy to increase profits. And despite the closures, company leaders hope to accelerate new store openings and operate 60 market hub locations by mid-2027.

Advance Auto additionally plans to consolidate its distribution centers so it operates just 13 facilities by 2026.
