PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- An Oregon hunting guide died from his injuries after getting shot in the back during a hunting expedition on Sunday, the Baker's County Sheriff's Office announced.

Authorities received a 911 call just before 8 a.m. from an SOS device reporting that a hunter had suffered a gunshot wound and was not breathing, officials said.

Deputies and medical personnel responded to the Fish Creek area near Hwy 86 on private property in Halfway, Oregon.

According to officials, two men, Leroy Trautman, 73, and Andrew Krebs, 62, were riding with their hunting guide, Jon Nichols, 62, when they saw a herd of elk. All three men exited the off-road vehicle.

"As Trautman chambered a round, the rifle discharged striking Nichols in the back. Trautman and Krebs performed CPR on Nichols but were unsuccessful," officials said.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
