WBSC Premier12 2024 Presented by RAXUS Group A - Day 4: Netherlands win slugfest over Puerto Rico, USA beat Panama
The fourth day of competition in the opening round of Group A at the WBSC Premier12 2024 presented by RAXUS saw USA got back into the win column with a 9-3 win against Panama in Tepic; while the Netherlands won a record-setting game against Puerto Rico, 20-8, at Estadio Panamericano in Guadalajara.
USA beat Panama 9-3 in a very important game for both squads on Tuesday. Both USA and Panama are now 2-2 in the standings, and will enjoy a day off on Wednesday before closing the tournament on Thursday. Ryan Ward hit a three-run homer in the second inning and collected five RBIs in the game to lead USA's offence.
USA's manager Mike Scioscia stressed the parity and competitiveness of the tournament. "Well, they're good teams and I think it shows if you play well, you have a chance to win. If you don't play well, you're not going to win," he said. "We played well tonight and got ourselves back in the tournament."
In Guadalajara, Netherlands also bounced back after losing their last game on Sunday with a record-setting 20-8 win against Puerto Rico. The game set a record of more runs scored in a game by a team (20), more hits by a team (24), more combined runs (28) and more combined hits (35).
Day five of the opening round in Mexico will see Venezuela taking on Puerto Rico at 1pm local time, while the Netherlands face Mexico at 8pm. Both games will be played in Guadalajara.
