Jennings Creek fire: Nearly 5,000 acres burned across NY, NJ

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The Jennings Creek fire has burned nearly 5,000 acres as New Jersey sees its driest conditions in 120 years, according to the state's Forest Fire Service.

Fire departments across New Jersey battled at least a dozen fires Wednesday morning. The Jennings Creek fire, which straddles the New York-New Jersey border, was only 30% contained.

A drought warning could be issued in New Jersey. New York City might issue a drought warning in the coming weeks if conditions don't improve, according to officials.

People across both states are currently being asked to voluntarily conserve water. New York City's reservoirs are two-thirds full, but by this time of year, they should be more than 75% full, according to New York City Emergency Management.

"We consume, believe it or not, 1 billion gallons of water a day," said NYCEM Commissioner Zach Iscol.

A drought watch includes restrictions on outdoor fires and voluntary water conservation. A warning would be the next step, which would call for more voluntary water-saving actions.

A drought emergency is the most serious level, with mandatory water restrictions on homes and businesses.
