Sundog over Margine Rosso, Sardinia
Photographer: Lorenzo Busilacchi Summary Author: Lorenzo Busilacchi
I observed this striking sundog from Margine Rosso, Sardinia, just before sunset on September 21, 2024. Sundogs, also called parhelia, are perhaps the most commonly observed optical phenomena. Whenever you see cirrus clouds (composed of ice crystals) in the vicinity of the Sun, look for them approximately 22-degrees away from the Sun and at the same solar altitude. They form only when the pencil-shaped crystals are oriented horizontally.
