Spurs’ record leading up to the international break shows a clear pattern, potentially suggesting that there could be a mentality issue among the Tottenham players.
Tottenham lose yet again ahead of the international break
Losing before the international break is a particularly big blow as it leaves the fans, the players, and the staff wallowing in misery for two weeks.
Ange Postecoglou would ideally prefer to have a game in another three days so that his players can react and change the mood around the club.
Instead, he and his coaching staff will now have to wait until November 23, with players jetting off to different parts of the world to join their national teams.
Tottenham’s poor record before the international break
The feeling of losing just ahead of the international fixtures is not new for Spurs, who have made it a habit under Postecoglou.
In fact, WhoScored have now revealed that Tottenham have ended up on the losing side in each of the last five fixtures they played ahead of international breaks, registering defeats against Wolves, Fulham, Newcastle, Brighton and Ipswich.
What does this tell us about Spurs’ mentality?
Perhaps this run of defeats is not a coincidence and suggests that the players are not 100 per cent focused ahead of breaks, with some of them looking over their shoulders at the upcoming international fixtures.
The performance against Ipswich was certainly not one you would expect from a team which is fully focused, with too many unforced errors being committed across the pitch.
At Premier League level, the margins are always fine and any side can overturn you if you allow your standards to drop by just a few per cent.
