HARLEM, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A 7-year-old girl was shot while walking on a Manhattan street Monday afternoon, police and sources said.

The child was shot in the abdomen near 301 West 145th St. and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem at 2:53 p.m., according to the NYPD. The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The girl was walking with her father, heading eastbound on West 145th Street, when two individuals popped out from behind a parked vehicle and fired several rounds, striking the girl, according to NYPD Deputy Chief Brian Gill.

"We believe it is gang-related," said Gill. "There were two intended people they were firing at mid-block on West 145th Street. Two males were apprehended; one had a firearm on him. We are currently looking for a second weapon."

At least nine rounds were fired, and seven shell casings were found at the scene. Citizen App video showed bullets that shattered a glass window at a nearby Starbucks.

A witness told PIX11 News he was working out in a gym and saw several people running past the location. When he got outside, he saw the girl with a bullet wound from her front to the back. He said the girl's father was screaming.

The child's father said the two had just picked up her new glasses when he heard the shots.

The girl went into surgery Monday evening, according to Mayor Eric Adams, who spoke near the scene of the shooting.

"It is never a good thing when a child is a victim of a shooting or when any innocent bystander is a victim of a shooting. We are going to see this through to justice," said Adams.
