Almost 80,000 pounds of butter have been recalled for containing an allergen not detailed in the packaging.

Wholesale retailer Costco is recalling 79,200 pounds of Kirkland Signature butter because the labels did not state that the dairy product ‘contains milk’.

The reason for the recall, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), was that the ‘butter lists cream, but may be missing the Contains Milk statement’.

Affected products included 32,400 pounds or 900 cases of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter and 46,800 pounds or 1,300 cases of Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter.

The FDA initiated the recall on October 11 but reclassified it on Thursday to a Class II, in which products can ’cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote’.

All the affected butter was produced by Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC and distributed in Texas.

The products had ‘best by’ dates of February 22, 2025, and March 29, 2025. The FDA has not issued a press release.

Many social media users mocked the butter recall for being about an obvious ingredient.

‘80,000 pounds of Costco butter was just recalled, because the label doesn’t say that it contains milk. It’s butter,’ wrote entrepreneur and activist Spike Cohen on X (formerly Twitter).

‘News articles are telling people how they can return, or safely dispose of, the butter. It’s butter.’

Another X user replied: ‘Also known as “I Can’t Believe You Didn’t Tell Me It’s Butter.”’

‘Can y’all please safely dispose of it at my house?’ wrote another X user.

‘I have a lot of holiday baking to do.’

The butter recall reclassification comes just weeks after Costco recalled its Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon sold from October 9 to 13 over possible listeria contamination.

Numerous food recalls have made headlines in the US recently, particularly a listeria outbreak that affected about 10million pounds of meat that was responsible for 10 deaths and 59 hospitalizations in 19 states.
