Law commissioner’s office understaffed, MPs hear on Friday

Law commissioner Louiza Christodoulou Zannetou told MPs on Friday that her office remained understaffed, despite provisions for two additional employees.

Speaking at the House finance committee, which was discussing the law commission’s budget for 2025, Zannetou said understaffing was the most pressing issue her office was facing and that so far needs have been covered by outsourcing.

This meant that there were neither incentives for experienced candidates to join the service, nor for younger ones to stay, the commissioner said.

She added that the budget for 2025 provided for three permanent employees, however filling the posts took months.

Zannetou explained that her office contributed to drafting and checking dozens of bills, translating legislation and promoting e-legislation to facilitate drafting bills.
