Max offers first looks at highly anticipated series, including ‘Hacks’ S4 and ‘The White Lotus’ S3

On Sunday night, during the finale of “The Penguin,” Max released one of those biannual teasers previewing the service’s upcoming programming that serves as a periodic reminder that HBO is the best in the business. Max’s 2025 is packed with a lot of exciting new and returning shows, and the spot shows off new footage from many of them, from the prequel series “IT: Welcome to Derry” to Emmy-winner “Hacks” Season 4. 

Among the returning series previewed in the spot, there are first looks at “Hacks” Season 4, featuring Deborah (Jean Smart) getting in Ava’s (Hannah Einbinder) face and sarcastically calling her a “big, brave girl,” to which Ava coolly replies “I guess I am;” “The White Lotus” Season 3, which features Walton Goggins admiring a huge gold Buddha statue and the return of Natasha Rothwell’s Season 1 character Belinda; and “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 4, which features John Goodman with a long, kinda scraggly new hairdo. 

On the new series front, there are fresh snippets of Noah Wyle’s buzzy medical procedural “The Pitt,” which is as close to an “ER” revival as it can be without actually being an “ER” revival; “IT: Welcome to Derry,” Andy Muschietti’s horror drama prequel series to his cinematic Stephen King adaptations; “Task,” an extremely under-the-radar limited crime series from “Mare of Easttown” creator Brad Inglesby starring Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent; Tim Robinson’s ambitious comedy series “The Chair Company;” and a documentary on Pee-Wee Herman that features the late Paul Reubens saying he wants to “set the record straight on a couple things.” 

The slate is heavy on I.P. and lacks an era-defining drama series like “Succession” (or even “Euphoria,” which is conspicuously absent), but it’s still a pretty exciting lineup. “The Rehearsal” is coming back!
