Varun Chakravarthy reveals Gautam Gambhir’s words as he made a comeback in Team India
Star Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy shared the talks about his conversation with head coach Gautam Gambhir, which had a great impact in making him understand his role in the team on his return. Varun came back to the team after a gap of almost three years during the recent T20I series against Bangladesh, and made immediate impression as he made his career-best score of 5 for 17.
Varun kept his form in the current T20I series against South Africa, as he took 8 wickets in 2 games- which also include a fifer in the second one. He also talked recently about how Gambhir had a massive impact in making him understand his job during Bangladesh series by getting him to focus more on wickets rather than runs.
“Yes, we played the Bangladesh tour and he was coaching the team. And definitely we spoke a lot and he gave me a lot of role clarity. He told me, even if you go for 30-40 runs, it doesn’t matter. All you have to look is to pick wickets. So that’s your role in the team. And yeah, the clarity which they gave definitely helped me,” said Varun after the game.
Varun also randomly added about the ‘tough’ time he had to go through as he got cut off from the team, and how playing cricket improved how he understands the game.
“The last three years were a little tough. The only thing I could do was play lots of cricket. And I started playing a lot of the domestic league (TNPL) in India. And that definitely helped me understand my game better. And that’s what helped me,” he said.
