Interactive map shows wildfires, air quality alerts in NY and NJ

NEW YORK (PIX11) – You may walk outside and smell smoke on Monday, depending on where you live in New York or New Jersey.

That's due to multiple wildfires burning across the tri-state area. If you're wondering how close you are to one of those fires, AirNow has an interactive Fire and Smoke Map.

AirNow is a partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and other federal, state, and local government bodies that tracks air quality alerts.

On Monday, two major fires on the map were the Whitehouse Fire in Ulster County and the Jennings Creek fire burning across New Jersey and New York. The Jennings Creek fire killed an 18-year-old New York State Parks employee who was battling the blaze, officials said.

You should still check for updates with your local fire departments and government services. In New Jersey, you can check the state's Forest Fire Service on X.
