Update: 5 men dead after shootings in south Wichita, police suspect murder-suicide
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Police say the five people shot and killed in south Wichita on Sunday were all men, ranging in age from 39 to 68. The Wichita Police Department continues to believe that one of the men shot the other four and then shot himself.
Just before 6 p.m. Sunday, 911 got a call about a death in the 1700 block of Santa Fe. When officers got inside the home, they found a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
Shortly after, they did a follow-up on another home in the 1900 block of S. Laura St. There, they found three more men dead of apparent gunshot wounds.
While police canvassed the neighborhood, an officer checked another residence in the 1900 block of S. Laura by looking through a window and discovered what appeared to be a victim in the living room. Officers forced their way in and found a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
The victims are ages 39, 42, 55, 67, and 68. Police have not released their names, only saying that they are all from Wichita. During the early stages of the investigation, police also said the five were known to each other, possibly as family or friends.
"We believe the investigation will determine that one of those victims was the shooter of all the other victims, but it's just too early on in the investigation for us to make a statement as to who we believe that is, but we have strong direction," WPD Chief Joe Sullivan said.
Police do not know the exact time of each shooting. That is part of the investigation. A family member called 911 about the shooting on Santa Fe, and that led to the discovery of the bodies in the 1900 block of S. Laura.
