Liverpool St Helens Women 34 – 05 Driffield Woldswomen

0

A tough game away in miserable conditions saw the Woldswomen defeated against league newcomers Liverpool St Helens on Sunday.

Having travelled well previously to Kendal and Birkenhead, the squad were keen to extend their away wins within the league, finishing top of the table following last week’s home win against Manchester, however Liverpool St Helens presented an incredibly grueling physical battle with an excellent kicking game. They set their standard early with a couple of tries and taking every opportunity to kick at the sticks taking the points and taking the lead early in the game. As the drizzle set in, Driffield upped the intensity, servicing the breakdown, forcing errors and counter rucking at every opportunity to steal ball. Phases began to come together, with forwards and backs working in unison, in attempts to create opportunities and hold the home side back. A quick tap penalty a few meters out saw Rianna Manson drive over the line for the Woldswomen’s only try of the the afternoon. Hannah swales continued to make yards out on the wing, with new centre partnerships, Maddy Dale, chloe Brockelbank and Jess Heywood showing skill and flair in attack and defence. Despite several efforts, Driffield just could not penetrate the home sides defence to add to the scoreline. Forwards ploughed through, seeing the likes of Micha Newman, Tippi Wadsworth, Lauren Fairbank and Annette Hunter edging towards the line protecting well against all counter attempts, only to be held up and denied the try after multiple phases. Frustration set in, with a yellow card for the Woldswomen, dropping to 14 players who upped the intensity yet again and did not allow the home side to score again, holding a try up over the line and refusing to allow Liverpool in with another score. The game finished at 34-5 to the home side and a hard fought win for Liverpool.

For her tenacity throughout the game, players player was awarded to Rianna Mansen who brings a new level of physicality to the side. Chloe continues to dominate in the centres, seeing her awarded with opposition’s choice. For controlling the game well in the 10 shirt Emily Dean was the coaches MVP.

The Woldswomen regroup on Wednesday 7pm, all welcome and look forward to their next fixture at home to Southport in early December.
