ACC Roundup - Wake Forest Tops Michigan
And Georgia Tech has a tough loss at home.
In Sunday’s ACC Action, Georgia Tech fell to North Florida 105-93, Wake Forest nipped Michigan 72-70 and Miami handled Binghamton 88-64.
Georgia Tech’s defense basically took this one off, letting North Florida shoot 53.6 percent. Worse, the Ospreys got to the foul line a lot, hitting 22-29.
After the game, coach Damon Stoudamire said this:
“It’s a weird game from the standpoint of we scored the ball but we just couldn’t stop them at all. We gotta go back to the drawing board. I’m not disappointed by any means, it’s still early, we just got some things we need to address. I’m bent out of shape by losing, I’m mad about losing, but we’ll get past this and we gotta get ready for the next game.”
Baye Ndongo had 20 points and 10 rebounds and four starters were in double figures. So was Lance Terry off the bench.
Georgia Tech had just four assists on 37 shots, which is pretty bad. The Yellow Jackets have work to do.
In fairness, Michigan is in transition, leaving the strange, erratic and sometimes explosive Juwan Howard era behind. Dusty May is a highly promising coach but it’s Year 1. Heck, it’s Week 1.
Still, this is a big win for Wake Forest. Michigan is a big brand regardless of how bad things are, and beating the Wolverines is a plum for Wake.
It was a tight game but Wake defended well down the stretch and Michigan didn’t get a basket for the last 3:48.
Hunter Sallis had 18 and Tre’Veon Spillers 16. Omaha Biliew, who was a 5 star recruit for Iowa State, scored just three points and had one rebound. It’s too early to know much, but he hasn’t been impressive so far.
As usual, Miami has good guard play and we saw it against Binghamton as Nijel Pack and Jalen Blackmon had 17 apiece. Jalil Bethea had 13 while Matthew Cleveland kicked in 9 points and 11 rebounds.
Lynn Kidd, formerly of Clemson and Virginia Tech, had just 6 points. It was only a buy game, but unlike Georgia Tech, at least Miami won it.
On Monday, Pitt gets Gardner-Webb, Buffalo visits Notre Dame, Winthrop hits Virginia Tech, Coppin State stops by Virginia and SMU hosts UNC Greensboro.
