These voters supported both Trump and AOC — here's what they were thinking
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) this cycle ran better in New York's 14th congressional district than Vice President Kamala Harris, which means that there were many voters who backed both an avowed democratic socialist and President-elect Donald Trump.
After election results showed that Trump made major gains in New York City this election cycle, Ocasio-Cortez solicited responses from locals who backed both her and Trump to get a sense of why they would support two candidates who appeared to be polar opposites politically.
The New York Democrat proceeded to post some of the replies on her Instagram page.

A common theme from these voters is simply that both Trump and Ocasio-Cortez expressed dissatisfaction with the status quo and wanted change.
"It's real simple," wrote one. "Trump and you care for the working class."
"Voted Trump but I like you and Bernie [Sanders]," wrote another. "I don't trust either party establishment politicians."
"I feel like you and Trump are both real," replied another.
"I feel that you both are outsiders compared to the rest of DC, and less 'establishment,'" explained another.
Other voters, meanwhile, said that they couldn't have backed Harris based on her association with the Biden administration's actions in Gaza, even though Trump has vowed to back the Israeli government with even fewer restraints.
One supporter of Ocasio-Cortez who did not vote for Trump, on the other hand, told the New York congresswoman that "the responses you got make me want to barf."
Ocasio-Cortez simply replied, "Sometimes you gotta dig in and see it to understand and adapt! Even if it makes you want to barf."
