My fence fell down and now our neighbours are FILMING our home – they say it’s for ‘security’ but we have zero privacy
A WOMAN has revealed that her garden fence fell down in a storm and now her neighbours have installed a camera that’s pointing directly into her home.
The distressed woman explained that whilst her neighbours claim they are filming for ‘security’ reasons, it has meant that she and her boyfriend now have zero privacy.

Posting on Reddit, on the r/legaladvice thread under the username @moateal, the woman titled her post ‘Neighbour has security camera pointing into our home’.
The woman, who is from Florida, US, explained that she and her boyfriend are renting a property.
But during a recent storm, their garden fence, which separates her garden from her neighbours’, fell down.
She confessed: “During Hurricane Helene, a portion of our back fence separating our yard with the neighbours yard fell down. We’ve never met them.
“Today we noticed the neighbour has installed a new security camera in the backyard but it’s pointing directly into our home.”
As a result of the intrusive camera, she added: “We feel very uncomfortable with the placement of this camera because we don’t have any privacy in our dining room, kitchen, porch, or backyard anymore.
“It’s also weird they placed it there because they have a fenced in yard too and it’s set up within the fence not where someone would actually break in from the front.
”I put up a tarp until our landlord gets the fence fixed. But even if the fence were up, it would still be an issue because it points right over the fence.”
Keen for advice, she asked: “What should we do?”
Reddit users quickly flocked to the comments to share their advice, convinced that there was nothing the woman could do in this situation.
One person said: “There’s no legal problem with your neighbour surveilling their yard in this way. Even if your house is in the background.”

To this, the woman replied: “Dang :/ I guess I’ll just have to get a really big sign to post over the fence to block it.”
Whilst a second claimed: “You have no legal leg to stand on.”
The Top Five Reasons Neighbours Squabble
One study by Compare the Market revealed the top reason British neighbour's argue
- Broken fences – top of the board was broken fences and whose responsibility it was to fix it
- Parking: one of the leading drivers of neighbour disputes, with 54.1 per cent of people having issues with people parking in front of their house, parking bay or driveway
- Trees – complaints about a neighbour’s tree cracking your garden path was also common with nearly half of participants finding it frustrating
- Bin wars – outdoor bin etiquette continues to ignite the most furious debates between neighbours
- Nosy Neighbours – some people have their eyes and ears at the ready to have a peek causing problems for others
To this, the woman then confirmed: “Thank you. I appreciate the opinion.
“I’m going to get a fence extension to block the view once the landlord replaces the fence.”
She also added: “[My] boyfriend is going to try talking to them soon but we wanted to make sure we are within our means to ask them to do that and then have the legal info ready in case they say no.
“We don’t mind them having it up. We just don’t want it pointed over the fence.”
