Ange Postecoglou tells Spurs hierarchy which position to prioritise in January
Ange Postecoglou makes it clear Tottenham hierarchy which position he is most keen on strengthening in the January transfer window, journalist Graeme Bailey reveals.
Tottenham’s injury crisis
Tottenham‘s injury situation at the moment can be described as a crisis, with Micky van de Ven, Wilson Odobert, Timo Werner, Mikey Moore, and Richarlison all currently sidelined.
The good news for Postecoglou is that some of those injuries are not serious and many of them could return after the international break.
However, the injuries have laid bare the weaknesses in Tottenham’s squad, with the Australian coach now down to the bare bones at the back as well in attack.
Ange Postecoglou names priority position
A whole host of players are now being linked with a mid-season move to Spurs as we edge closer to the January window, but according to Bailey, Postecoglou is clear which position should be prioritised.
Given Van de Ven’s fitness record, the Tottenham boss has allegedly told the Lilywhites hierarchy to bring a left-sided central defender through the door.
Bailey told The Spurs News: “I think defence is a worry, especially with Van de Ven being injured, we know they wanted a centre-half before that anyway.
“From what I’m hearing, I think especially now a left-sided centre-back looks to be the priority because that’s the area they are most short in. They cannot afford another major injury there.”
Should a left-back be prioritised over a centre-back?
Most observers will agree that Ben Davies is a much better fit for the left centre-back role in Postecoglou’s system than the inverted left-back role.
The Welshman is certainly reliable enough to serve as the fourth choice in the heart of defence, which is why one wonders if the North London club would prioritise signing a backup to Destiny Udogie instead.
There have been plenty of reports over recent weeks suggesting that Spurs are eyeing a move for Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu (The Mirror), and the 20-year-old would certainly fit the bill.
