Bribery case adds to problems in Mississippi city with water woes and policing disputes
Bribery and conspiracy charges against the mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, are the latest shock to the state's capital city. A federally appointed official is already running the water system after it nearly collapsed. And state police are patrolling parts of the majority-Black city because of white legislators’ concerns about crime. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and two other officials have pleaded not guilty to federal charges. The mayor's sister Rukia Lumumba says she believes federal authorities are prosecuting her brother because he threatens their power. Frequent mayoral critic and City Council member Kenneth Stokes says politicians should not promise to help others but only help themselves.
