Palestine conflict: UN reports 70% of Gaza war victims are women and children
In its ongoing assault on Palestinian territories, Israel’s military actions have caused widespread civilian casualties. The United Nations Human Rights Office recently released statistics showing that approximately 70% of the victims of the ongoing Gaza war are women and children.
The UN Human Rights Office condemned the high number of civilian casualties in the Gaza conflict. Their analysis reveals that around 70% of the confirmed casualties during a six-month period were women and children.
The UN office further emphasized that a significant number of the children who were killed were under the age of 14.
Ajit Singh, the head of the United Nations Human Rights Office for the occupied Palestinian territories, stated that between November 2023 and the end of August this year, the office was able to verify 10,000 deaths from a reported total of 34,500 casualties.
Singh also mentioned that nearly 80% of these deaths occurred in residential buildings. According to him, 70% of the fatalities were women and young children.
The second-largest group of casualties were children aged 10 to 14, followed by children under the age of four.
Singh also indicated that the actual death toll is likely much higher, as many deaths remain unconfirmed and thousands of people are still trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings.
These figures were published by the United Nations, despite Israel’s repeated claims that it targets Hamas and uses precision weapons to minimize harm to civilians.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a tragic loss of life, particularly among vulnerable populations such as women and children. While Israel insists that its operations are aimed at militant groups, the scale of civilian suffering calls into question the effectiveness of such measures in protecting non-combatants.
The true extent of the devastation may not be fully known until rescue operations can access the affected areas, highlighting the urgent need for international efforts to protect civilian lives and bring an end to the conflict.
