Drying washing on an airer can take days, and often leaves clothes smelling damp.

This can also lead to mould, but the alternative, using the tumble dryer, can be very costly.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, one mum complained that every time she put her daughter’s school blazer in the washing machine, it came out smelling of damp.

She said she’d tried everything to get the smell out, from using scent boosters to Zoflora, but nothing had worked.

The mum revealed: “It’s literally as it comes out of the washing machine.

“It’s still warm. But it smells so damp. It’s horrid.

“It’s stressing me out, as I don’t want her to go to school stinking of damp washing.”

Facebook users raced to the comments section of the post to share their advice and many people suggested the same thing.

One person said: “I would recommend using soda crystals to clean the washer.

“When clothes come out smelling damp I use soda crystals in an empty drum to clean the washer.

“My kid’s uniform and clothes come out freshly clean.”

A second person said: “I use soda crystals to clean the washing machine once a month when clothes start to smell damp after washing.”

A number of other users also swore by the tip, and you can pick up soda crystals for the bargain price of just 80p – then using just a spoonful in your wash.

Thanking people for the helpful tip, the mum said: “Washing it on a synthetic wash and tumble drying (again on synthetic).
