Sports Briefs: MA’s McDermotts repeat as doubles champs

Marin Academy’s Ann McDermott and Jane McDermott secured their second consecutive Bay Counties League West doubles tennis championship with a victory on Thursday. The McDermotts are automatically qualified for the North Coast Section doubles tournament, which they also won last season.

Prep cross country

San Domenico runner Devin Price placed fourth at Friday’s BCL West cross country championship at San Francisco’s Lindley Meadow with a personal record of 16 minutes, 13 seconds. Finneas DeGooyer (17:07.7) finished 20th to lead sixth-place Marin Academy. The San Domenico boys placed fifth.

The fourth-place Marin Academy girls were paced by Luella Shepard, who finished fifth with a mark of 18:53.7. She was followed by teammate Sadie Goodenough (20:04.1) in 12th place. The Panthers’ Sarah Haskell (20:40.2) bested her previous record by 45 seconds on the 5 kilometer course to finish 17th as San Domenico took sixth place.

Women’s water polo

Anabelle Phillips led the Mariners with four goals, two assists and two steals but College of Marin fell to Las Positas College, 15-7, in Friday’s Coast Conference third-place game at IVC. Delaney Mannor, Adriana Thomas and Novato High grad Allie Pierotti also scored for the Mariners. Goalkeeper Marie Fehring, a San Marin grad, had 19 saves in the Marin net.

The Mariners got two goals from Phillips and one from Marlee Ostrom in a 19-3 semifinal loss to West Valley earlier Friday.

Women’s basketball

Alex Salise led Dominican University (1-3) with 13 points and four rebounds, but the Penguins fell 68-52 to Sonoma State on Friday to open the FPU Crossover in Fresno. Abigail Cooper added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Jayme Blackard led the Seawolves (1-0) with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Men’s soccer

Benjamin Rodas scored the hat trick to lead College of Marin past Yuba, 8-0, on Friday. Jhonatan McKenzie, Aontoni Cortez, Waldon Diaz, Jose Ruiz and Devin Reyes Mazariegos also scored for Marin (6-11-4). The Mariners wrap up the regular season on. Tuesday with a home game against Mendocino.

Women’s soccer

College of Marin bested Mendocino, 5-1, on Friday as the Mariners (6-11) prepare for the final week of play. Marin has games against Yuba and Contra Costa left on the schedule.
