Green Island recognizes veterans for their service

GREEN ISLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- More than 20 military veterans were posthumously recognized in Green Island on Friday for their service. Loved ones of veterans who served in World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War received medals as a way for the community to say thank you.

The ceremony gave the families of veterans a chance to learn about their time in the military. Organizers said their stories deserve to be told.

"Veterans, in general, don't talk about what they had to do," Rev. Francis A. Kelley Society member Thomas Mullins said. "This brings it out in the open in a positive way and casts light on their bravery and what they fought for."

Three veterans received honorary high school diplomas. Organizers hope to show that it is never too late to recognize those who have served the country.
