Ben Davies is Tottenham’s longest-serving player

Ben Davies signed for Spurs way back in 2014, and is now the club’s longest-serving current player with over 10 years of service for the Lilywhites.

In that time, Davies has made over 330 appearances for Spurs, scoring nine goals and registering 23 assists.

He was signed by Mauricio Pochettino, and has played for four further permanent managers, as well as seeing Ryan Mason take temporary charge of the team on two occasions.

As time has gone by, Davies has seen his game time reduce season by season, but he is still regarded as a solid member of the squad who can help Spurs through more difficult cup games. He’s able to provide good cover for a number of players in the squad thanks to his versatility.

Which club did Spurs sign Ben Davies from?

Tottenham signed Ben Davies from his boyhood club, Swansea City, for whom he made 85 appearances.

Davies, interestingly, did spend a short spell with Danish outfit Viborg FF in the early days of his career. But, he returned to Swansea and established himself as a top defender there.

The fee to take Davies to Spurs in 2014 is thought to have been just over £8m. Considering how long he has served Spurs now, that deal was a real bargain.

Ben Davies’ salary and transfer market value

Ben Davies is paid £80,000 per week at Spurs. As for his market value, Davies is thought to still be worth around £8m.

When it comes to the Tottenham wage bill, Davies finds himself around the middle of the bunch, with an annual salary of £4.16m per year. His current contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season, and it is unknown whether he will be given a new deal.

It is rather interesting that his market value is still the same as it was ten years ago, especially considering his age and the length of contract he has remaining.

Is he a centre-back or a left-back?

Although he began his career as a left-back, Ben Davies is arguably better-suited to playing at centre-half now and that is where he features most prominently for Spurs.

In his younger days, Davies was able to offer a lot more going forward down the left-hand side, and naturally, had more fitness. That said, he still has a decent engine and will rarely stop running for the team.

However, he is more effective in the middle these days, and has plenty of positional awareness, is great at tackling, and is not afraid to throw himself in front of shots to make crucial blocks.

With Ange Postecoglou demanding a lot from his full-backs in the inverted role, Davies is unable to deliver the adventurousness he needs, and is stronger as a reliable head at centre-back, especially with his ball-playing ability.

A Welsh legend

Davies is one of the most experienced Wales players right now, and has 89 caps to his name for his country.

He made his debut for the national team in October 2012, and is still representing Wales to this day. Davies is now the captain for Wales, and has worn the armband regularly since last summer.

Davies has been almost ever-present for his country ever since he made his debut, more often than not playing the full 90 minutes whenever he is in the squad. He was involved in Wales’ epic run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, and also featured in Euro 2020 and World Cup 2022.

If he can keep going for a couple more years, there is every chance Davies will overtake Spurs legend Gareth Bale as his country’s most-capped player. Bale has 111 caps but has, of course, retired from football now.

Ben Davies’ family and personal information

Ben Davies was born in Neath, Wales, on April 24, 1993, making him 31-years-old at the time of writing.

He is 1.81m tall and weighs 76kg, which is a fairly average balance and build for an athlete.

Davies has a degree in economics and business from the Open University. When he retires from football, there is every chance he will make a success of himself in whatever he applies himself too, and he is thought to be one of the most intelligent members of the Tottenham squad.

He is happily married to Emily, and the couple have a son named Ralph, to whom Heung-min Son is godfather. The pair are best friends, largely due to the fact they are a similar age and are two of the longest-serving Spurs players.

You can find Ben Davies on Instagram, where he has just under 400k followers. While he does have a Twitter/X account with close to 190k followers, he has not used the platform since 2020.
