'So it begins': Expert flags '5-alarm fire' coming from top Trump AG contender

A Washington Post opinion columnist sounded the alarm Friday afternoon over what she called a "5-alarm fire" coming from a leading contender to become President-elect Donald Trump's next attorney general.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) said Thursday that the Executive Branch should be "under the direction of the president."

"That’s how the Constitution was designed," said Lee. "The Federal Reserve is one of many examples of how we’ve deviated from the Constitution in that regard."

He called it, "Yet another reason why we should #EndTheFed."

Lee's comments were in response to Jerome Powell's comment that he would not resign even if Trump asked.

Lee's response caught the attention of columnist Catherine Rampell, who frequently writes about economics.

"And so it begins, from a top contender for Trump’s AG," she posted on X. "Again, if inflation is your top issue, destroying central bank independence and putting the money supply in the hands of politicians should be a 5-alarm fire."

She shared an explainer that she wrote in May in which she sounded the alarm for those who care about inflation that Trump wants to "kneecap the Federal Reserve."

She warned that politicians who want to juice the economy in the short run for political motivations could end up harming the country in the long run.

"Central bankers must be able to make unpopular decisions without fear of losing their jobs. That’s the only way they have any hope of achieving their dual mandate, which is stable prices and maximum employment," she said.
