Red flag warning for NYC and NJ: What it means and what to do

0

NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York City has issued a red flag warning that will stay in effect until 6 p.m. Friday.

A notice on the NotifyNYC social media account says, New Yorkers may see or smell smoke because of multiple wildfires burning in New Jersey.

“Exercise caution w/ outdoor flames. Immediately report fires to 911,” the notice reads.

A total of nine wildfires are currently burning throughout New Jersey, according to the state’s Forest Fire Service. The fire burning nearest to New York is the Industrial Parkway Wildfire in Essex County.

The fires come amid dry weather, record temperatures, and drought watches in New York and New Jersey. Officials say these conditions have contributed to higher fire risk.

Below are tips on how to stay safe during a red flag warning, as outlined by the New York City Health Department.

Red flag warning safety tips

  • Stay inside with windows and doors closed if temperatures allow
  • Use a portable air cleaner
  • Limit activities that can worsen indoor air, like frying or broiling foods, smoking or vaping, vacuuming, burning candles or incense, or using a fireplace.
  • Wear a well-fitting N95 or KN95 mask
  • Reduce physical activity outside if you’re not feeling well
  • Monitor NYC alerts
