'Unprecedented': Jack Smith asks court to make decisions about Trump case immediately

0

Special counsel Jack Smith filed a request to the federal courts to vacate the all of the deadlines in Donald Trump's D.C. criminal case and advise on next steps.

"The Government respectfully requests that the Court vacate the remaining deadlines in the pretrial schedule to afford the Government time to assess this unprecedented circumstance and determine the appropriate course going forward consistent with Department of Justice policy," the filing said according to the screen capture from Politico's Kyle Cheney.

He went on to say that by Dec. 2, he'll provide a status report about what the DOJ intends to do next.

Legal analysts were grateful to see Smith request to push things forward.

"Thank you, Merrick Garland. If only he had taken our advice in early 2021," posted law professor Jennifer Taub.

“This is the opposite of how to oppose autocracy,” posted former ethics czar Norm Eisen on social media platform X, formerly called Twitter.
