World reactions to Trump’s US election victory
Donald Trump’s “historic” victory in the U.S. presidential election has sparked widespread international reactions. Leaders from most countries, especially NATO member states, have congratulated him on his win.
World leaders expressed hope in their congratulatory messages for constructive and beneficial collaboration with Trump and his administration in the years ahead. However, reactions to Trump’s victory in the Middle East region were somewhat different.
Hamas called on Trump to fulfill his promise to end the conflict in Gaza. Meanwhile, Israel’s Prime Minister described Trump’s win as the “greatest historic comeback,” with celebrations taking place in Tel Aviv.
Fatemeh Mohajerani, spokesperson for the Islamic Republic of Iran, responded by saying that Trump’s victory is of no importance to Iran, adding that the Islamic Republic’s “consistent” policies toward the U.S. remain unchanged regardless of changes in leadership.
In contrast, Iranian President’s senior advisor Javad Zarif warned of a potential decline in Iranian oil sales and prices following Trump’s win. He noted, “Oil sales increased because Biden loosened the sanctions. Let Trump come back, and we’ll see what happens to Iran’s oil market.”
The interim Taliban government in Afghanistan also responded to Trump’s victory, stating their expectation that he will play a “constructive role” in ending ongoing conflicts in the region and worldwide.
Qahar Balkhi, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry, expressed hope that the “future U.S. government will take realistic steps to achieve tangible progress in relations between the two countries.”
He added, “The Doha Agreement between the Taliban and the United States was signed during President Donald Trump’s term, leading to the end of the 20-year occupation.”
Trump has repeatedly criticized the Biden administration for its complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan, including the strategic Bagram Airbase, which he considered a crucial asset due to its proximity to China.
According to Trump, maintaining a presence at Bagram would have strengthened the U.S. position in the region, both strategically and in terms of regional stability.
Trump’s return to office has generated a mix of cautious optimism and apprehension among global leaders, with varied expectations about how his administration will impact international relations and regional conflicts.
As Trump’s policies unfold, nations worldwide will closely watch how his administration navigates complex international issues, especially in regions like the Middle East, where stability and peace remain fragile.
