Red Sox Trade? MLB GM Raises Valid Point About Potential Blockbuster

The pitching-needy Boston Red Sox might not have to spend money to get a much-needed starter for the 2025 campaign.

It remains to be seen if Boston will address its pitching issues with a trade or splash in free agency, but according to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, “there’s a widespread sense that the Red Sox can trade for nearly anyone.”

How exactly could the Red Sox pull that off? Well, it would include parting ways with a combination of the “Big Four” — prospects Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer, and Kyle Teel.

“That position player group is about as good as you can find,” one American League GM said, per Speier. “(They can) 100 percent (deal for anyone). And it’s also totally fair to say, ‘Hey, all (four) of those guys may be here in ’25 and help us, so we’re not going to trade them.’ They’re really good.”

Speier noted pitchers the Red Sox could acquire through trade were Chicago White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet or St. Louis Cardinals righty Sonny Gray.

After finishing the season at an even 81-81, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Boston is open to engaging in the offseason market either through trade or free agency to elevate the ball club, prevent the disastrous finishes of the past three season and return to the postseason.

Breslow said the Red Sox have a “bunch” of position players that the club feels good about, but may maximize their value by either keeping them in Boston or trading them.
