In a historic and hard-fought race, Donald Trump has emerged victorious over Vice President Kamala Harris in last night’s election.

Despite a strong campaign marked by impassioned speeches, high-profile endorsements, and a focused agenda on economic equity, climate change, and healthcare reform, Harris ultimately conceded defeat after a closely watched count that culminated in Trump securing the necessary electoral votes.

Harris called Trump on Wednesday to congratulate him on his victory, according to CBS News Senior White House and Political Correspondent Ed O’Keefe.

Attributing the report to a senior Harris campaign official, O’Keefe posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the vice president “discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being a president for all Americans.”

Harris’ official concession speech, initially scheduled for 6 p.m. ET, has been moved to 4 p.m. ET, as reported by journalist Nandita Bose. This speech is expected to reflect on the campaign’s journey, address supporters, and emphasize the core values she championed throughout her time in office and during the election.

For Harris, the election represented not only a battle for policies but also an effort to maintain the momentum of progressive initiatives enacted during the previous administration. Her platform was centered on social justice, environmental sustainability, and expanding access to affordable healthcare, and she advocated heavily for youth and minority voting engagement. However, a combination of economic factors, regional shifts in voter sentiment, and challenges in key battleground states ultimately contributed to her defeat.

Harris’ anticipated address later today will likely serve as a moment of reflection and unity for her supporters. As the first woman of color to serve as vice president, she broke numerous barriers and inspired countless Americans. Her message will likely emphasize the importance of continuing to engage with the political process and supporting policies that foster inclusivity and equity.

While the election has come to an end, Harris’ impact on American politics is enduring. From her role as a U.S. senator to her time as vice president, she has helped shape the national dialogue on issues such as criminal justice reform and gender equality. Her legacy, and her vision for America, will continue to resonate with her supporters, who look forward to her ongoing contributions to public life.

The concession speech is expected to provide clarity on Harris’ future plans and set the stage for what lies ahead in this next chapter of her career.
