Travis County's affordable childcare proposition passes

0

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Travis County voters approved Proposition A in Tuesday’s general election, ushering in a property tax increase in support of affordable childcare options.

Nearly 60% of voters supported the measure, with 99% of precincts reporting.

The 2.5-cent property tax hike will go toward 1,900 childcare slots for babies and toddlers of low-income households, along with 3,900 slots for afterschool and summer school activities for elementary-age students.

Additionally, Prop A proposes incentives for businesses offering childcare options for its employees.

It’s expected to cost households an annual increase of about $125, according to county staff. Once implemented, the tax increase could generate $75 million for the county in the first year alone.

Currently, childcare is more expensive in Travis County than anywhere else in Texas.

Travis County Commissioners voted unanimously in August to put the measure on this year’s ballot, citing increased affordability challenges for families.

It’s expected to roll out in a phased approach, with services available as early as fall 2025.
