Paphos court throws out local government election objection

0

The electoral court of Paphos on Wednesday rejected an objection submitted by Costas Constantinou through which he disputed Charalambos Pittokopittis’ win in the local June elections for district administration (EOA) president.

The court ruled that Constantinou’s objection to the vote count at polling stations was marred by a lack of convincing and solid testimony based on facts.

It concluded that no good reason has been demonstrated to justify the issuance of any remedies claimed by the applicant.

At no point during the process did the announced election results differ from the ones sent out from polling stations, the court said.

Justifying its decision to reject Constantinou’s request to cancel the election, despite minor inconsistencies, the court said: “in Article 58(b) of the Law there is an express provision, according to which non-compliance with the provisions of the Law does not annul the election, unless it affected its outcome.”

The law provides the right of appeal within 14 days which Constantinou is said to be considering.
