Andy Cohen & Son Ben Encourage Americans After Presidential Election: ‘We Will Persist’
Waking up to the shocking news that former president and convicted felon Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election feels like a huge slap in the face to Americans who worked tirelessly to protect rights for women and underserved communities — for those of us who wanted human decency to prevail. And while you might feel despair this morning (which is completely valid!), parents have to pull through for our children and everyone else who still needs us in our corner. Andy Cohen demonstrated this perfectly in a heartfelt plea to Americans in a new video with his 5-year-old son Ben — and it just might help heal your heart a little bit.
The Watch What Happens Live star captioned a video on Instagram this morning, “God Bless America! ????????” In the selfie, Cohen asks his eldest son, “What’s your take on the election? What do you think happened?”
“Donald Duck winned,” Ben replied off camera, making Cohen laugh at the nickname.
“He did,” Cohen responded, then reminded Ben, “But we love our country, don’t we? We love our country.”
Ben responds by just putting a thumbs-up to the camera. Honestly, Ben, I have no words either. Cohen is stronger than me to immediately say he still loves his country, because I’m having very complicated feelings about my fellow Americans right now and have never been less proud to be an American.
Then, knowing that the adults watching need some encouragement too, Cohen turns to the camera and says, “Yes, we do. We will… persist.” He nods his head, as if he wants to say so much more (and/or trying not to cry), then adds, “We will move forward.”
We have to, right? We can mourn the future that could have been, but we can’t give up hope or abandon the fight for a better America for the sake of our kids.
The comments were divided, with many Trump supporters writing mean things in the replies. But people who actually want to heal and unite the country have left more positive things on his post. “Let’s all go thank our first ever female VP for running a smart and kind campaign. She did everything right. American did her wrong,” one person wrote.
“We will survive. We must. For our children, for our mothers, for our democracy ❤️???????? I feel the tears welling up in your eyes Andy… I feel it too,” someone else said. Another commented, “I had to have a cry before my son woke up this morning. My son said that at least he can’t be elected again.”
Someone else summed it up like this, “America was handed back to its abusive husband.” It absolutely breaks our hearts.
Yesterday, the Bravo TV host shared a picture of him and his 2-year-old daughter Lucy going to vote on Election Day. He had an “I Voted” sticker on and she had a “I’m a Future Voter” sticker on. “I voted for Her, for her ???????? ????,” he captioned the post.
We are all going to be OK, because we have to be.
