OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- A 59-year-old Opelousas woman is accused of negligent homicide after an infant was found unresponsive in a car seat, according to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said Sarah Sonnier, of Tulip drive, was arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

According to a news release, the sheriff's office responded to a call of an unresponsive infant in the Tulip Drive area on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Responding deputies found persons at the scene performing CPR on the infant. The sheriff's office said Deputy Patrick Martin took over CPR while waiting on emergency medical services to arrive.

"Despite the efforts of the deputy and EMS, the infant never regained consciousness," the sheriff's office said.

Investigators learned that the infant was dropped off to the babysitter around 4:45 a.m. that day, restrained in the infant car seat. The infant was allegedly left in the car seat and unattended until about 6:50 a.m. The sheriff's office said it was around that time that the child was noticed to be unresponsive and slumped in the car seat.

Anyone with additional information about the incident encouraged to call the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-948-6516.
