Bowen Yang and Chappell Roan Seem Just Fine
The country may be divided on the eve of the presidential election, but at least two divas don’t appear to be fighting after all. After fans accused Saturday Night Live comedian Bowen Yang of attacking Chappell Roan in an October skit featuring a baby pygmy hippo (a.k.a. Moo Deng), the duo appeared side-by-side during the closing credits of Saturday’s episode. As host John Mulaney thanked the week’s guests, including Roan, who performed a new country song called “The Giver,” the two held hands, giggled, and (coincidentally, it seems) wore a matching color palette. On Sunday, the actor posted a photo of the moment, on which Roan commented: “I LOVE U.” As Yang told Roan in an August conversation for Interview magazine, “The queers are going to make sure you’re okay.” In this case, a close translation might read: The gays on SNL will always find each other.
In case you missed the Moo Deng–lesbian pop star drama, last month, Yang portrayed Thailand’s internet-famous hippo as an overwhelmed starlet. As part of the segment, the SNL cast member jokingly whined about needing to set boundaries after an overnight rise to fame and “going nonstop” for weeks. It was a clear reference to Roan’s repeated requests for boundaries, and her fans called Yang out for “mocking” Roan’s mental health. Responding to the backlash on Instagram, Yang said that the sketch had been misinterpreted. “If my personal stance and the piece aren’t absolutely clear in terms of supporting her, then there it is I guess,” Yang said. “Everything she has ever asked for has been reasonable, and even then we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever.”

But in case there were any lingering questions, the fact that these two cozied up together onstage looking like they might be planning a sleepover party is your answer. Live from New York, the gays are healing.
