Major European Airport Underwater as Flooding Devastates Area

0

As of Monday afternoon, Barcelona is under an “extreme danger” red alert warning after intense rainstorms inundated the city, flooding the airport and causing chaos on roadways. The announcement comes just six days after intense flooding in Valencia claimed the lives of more than 200 people.

Catalonia’s regional government has issued an urgent warning to citizens to avoid travel and to stay away from rivers, waterways, and storm drains. In footage heartbreakingly similar to that out of Valencia last week, cars could be seen being swept away in the deluge.

On Monday, dozens of flights out of Barcelona’s El Prat Airport were severely delayed or altogether canceled after water flooded the runway and surrounding grounds, even making its way into the terminal as passengers were forced to wade through ankle-deep muck.

One shocking clip showed the airport’s entrance almost entirely submerged underwater.

Highways in Catalonia have been closed due to flooding, and all regional trains services have been temporarily suspended. Aemet, the country’s meteorological agency, issued a red warning across Barcelona’s coastline denoting “extreme danger,” warning that cumulative rainfall will reach 180 liters (47 gallons) per square meter over the course of 12 hours.

The rain is expected to last until about 2 p.m. local time. Officials do not expect that the flooding and devastation will be as severe as what Valencia endured last week.
