SHARON SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Hoshino Resorts, a Japanese hotel management company, is bringing its first resort in the continental United States to Sharon Springs. The resort will have a onsen ryokan experience with mineral springs, said the company.

"We aim to revive Sharon Springs’ mineral water legacy through presenting the onsen ryokan experience," said Hoshino Resorts. "Onsen ryokan" means "hot spring inn."

Sharon Springs Mayor Denise Kelly told NEWS10 that she and her husband sold Hoshino the land on Main Street to build the resort. Kelly has not yet received the plans for when construction is supposed to start.

"The spa culture here is very old and very deep," said Kelly. "There's a lot of positive energy around a spa reopening in this town. It's something that's being welcomed and we're ready for it."

According to Hoshino Resorts, the Sharon Springs property will have 40 guest rooms and use mineral waters on site. The resort is expected to open in 2028.

Hoshino Resorts first started in Japan in 1914 and is now run by fourth-generation family member Yoshiharu Hoshino. The company has hotels in Japan, Guam, Taiwan, Bali, China, and Hawaii.
