Driffield Woldswomen 30 – 15 Manchester Women : Sunday, 03 November 2024
The Woldswomen were back on home turf this week keen to get back to winning ways. Driffield welcomed Manchester in a league fixture in which a win would see Driffield at the top of the table.
Driffield started strong keeping possession of the ball well culminating in a number of try scoring opportunities early on. The deadlock was finally broken after 15 minutes when a well drilled catch and drive from
Driffield saw Mel Freeman go over the whitewash.
Just a few minutes after the kick off, some nice handling from the back line found winger Jaz Naylor who made a strong run from her own half, fighting off two defenders before scoring the try.
Manchester were tough opponents who fought to stay in the game and were rewarded with a try of their own making the scoreline 10-5.
However shortly before half time, another strong catch and drive from Driffield was expertly finished by Mel Freeman scoring her second of the game. The half time score 15-5.
The second half started much the same as the first and Driffield scored their bonus point try just minutes in. Another nice break from Naylor found Driffield inches from the try line. Centre Chloe Brocklebank pounced and dotted the ball over the line. An undeterred Manchester scored straight from the following kick off, catching their own kick and finished nicely by their winger. This took the score to 20-10.
Manchester grew in confidence making some strong carries and having some good spells of possession, but flankers Freeman and Charlie Goode worked tirelessly around the rucks winning turn over after turn over.
The next score came after some good passages of play and Driffield found themselves at Manchester’s tryline once again. Some strong carries from the forwards made space out wide for the backs to exploit resulting in winger Hannah Swales dotting down for her maiden try.
Manchester did not let Driffield run away with it and had their best spell of possession following Swales’s try. They continued to put the pressure on Driffield and eventually were rewarded with a try.
Driffield managed to hold on to the end and in the final minute of the game a nice break from work horse Freeman found Ellie Harding who beat two defenders and rounded off an excellent Driffield performance with one last try. The final score was 30-15 which puts Driffield at the top of the league.
Coaches player was awarded to Jaz Naylor showing a growth in confidence week on week.
Player’s player and oppositions choice was awarded to Mel Freeman for strong work around the rucks and excellent work rate.
The Woldswomen are now top of the table 4 points clear of their rivals and look forward to travelling to Liverpool St Helens this Sunday, for what is certain to be another challenging game.
