Man reacts to ex-wife's bond reduction in infant death case: 'It was a big shocker'

JEFF DAVIS PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- The ex-husband of Hannah Faith Cormier, a Jennings woman who faces charges in connection with the hot car death of her infant child, said he is shocked that Cormier's bond was reduced and she was released from jail.

Nick Ashworth said he was notified by several friends of the news.

"Man, it was a big shocker, like I couldn't believe it. I was reached out by a few friends and when they told me I was like 'What?' I had to go look for myself because I really couldn't believe it. I just don't understand. It's wild," Ashworth said.

Cormier was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and cruelty to a juvenile after her 10-month-old daughter died after being left in a car for several hours in the August heat. Her bond was initially set at $1 million.

According to the Associated Press, a grand jury indicted Cormier on a lesser charge to which she pleaded not guilty. She has been out of jail on a $10,000 bond, pending a pre-trial conference set for March 31. That conference will determine whether the case will go to trial or be resolved with a plea.

Ashworth said he is stunned that she was released.

"I just wish they would investigate it more instead of just giving her a slap on the wrist. If it was me or somebody else did that, we would be under the jail. She's always gotten away with a lot of stuff. I don't know how it's happening," Ashworth said.

Ashworth said he hopes to be able to attend a pre-trial conference.

"If it's allowed, I do plan on being there with an attorney and see what I can do to help the case on my behalf regarding my kids with her," Ashworth said.

Ashworth previously told KLFY News 10 that he had filed a report against the mother in 2016 for an alleged incident involving his then 4-month-old child. He said the 2016 report accused Cormier of shoving his infant daughter’s head into a pillow to stop her from crying.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
