'Holy mother of god': Election guru points to trouble for Trump buried in Iowa poll

0

Appearing on MSNBC on Sunday, former Barack Obama campaign manager Jim Messina admitted he was as shocked as anyone that Vice President Kamala Harris has surged ahead in Iowa according to the state's leading and most respected pollster.

The poll by J Ann Selzer, which was published late Saturday in the De Moines Register, sent shockwaves through both parties and led the former president Donald Trump to flip out on Sunday morning.

Asked by MSNBC host Jen Psaki for his take on what transpired, he first exclaimed, "Holy mother of god!" before admitting he didn't see Harris winning Iowa while also noting that a deeper dive into the details revealed very bad news for the former president.

According to Messina, who helped guide Obama to two wins in conservative Iowa, "Do I think that she will win Iowa? I don't. But what you see is enthusiasm and momentum, we have been talking for a while about why enthusiasm matters."

"The people will vote and you get money, you see that in polling, too," he continued. "People answer polls more and answer the phone more. They are excited about their candidate and that's what you saw last night. You also see this surge at the end for Harris and you mostly see it –– and this is what I most excited about, put aside the Iowa poll for a second –– is the ground game."

He later added, "When you dig into the numbers, the numbers I care most about are two blocks: women voters and young voters. Those two voting blocks voting blocks are in common big. Women voters make up 55 percent of the early voters and in the past 10 days, voters in the battleground states are coming out in what looks to be for early votes, in historic numbers. That makes the Harris campaign very happy."
