ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The woman charged in the death of a baby found abandoned in Albany 27 years ago has a new attorney. Keri Mazzuca, 52, of Altamont, appeared in Albany County Court on Friday afternoon.

Mazzuca is charged with second degree murder, concealment of a human corpse, and tampering with physical evidence. Prosecutors said they are ready for trial. Discovery evidence was turned over to the new attorney, who will be given time to review.

The case stems from 1997 when an infant was found wrapped in a pillowcase near the Moses statue in Washington Park. Attorney Andrew Safranko discussed the challenges of defending an older case.

"A lot of evidence has been lost, but at this point, we need to see what was collected at the time, and then how they got to this position," he said.

Mazzuca was arrested in September. Investigators used DNA evidence to identify her as a suspect. She is being held in jail without bail.
