Boeing workers to vote on new contract proposal after weeks on strike
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Striking Boeing workers are voting on a new contract proposal on Monday after weeks of strikes on the West Coast.
The proposal would give workers an over 43% compounded wage increase over the course of four years for members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). The deal also includes gains in retirement funding, job security and bonuses, the union said.
The vote comes as more than 33,000 IAM-represented workers at Boeing locations in Washington, Oregon and California have been on strike since Sept. 13.
“The resolve and solidarity of IAM members at Boeing has spurred a new offer from the company that if ratified will enable workers to quickly make up significant ground financially while setting a new standard for the industry on wages and other key protections – including key wins on job security, safety, health care costs, retirement, bonus pay, and more," said IAM District 751 President Jon Holden and IAM District W24 President Brandon Bryant in a joint statement.
IAM Union International President Brian Bryant added the following statement:
Nearly every worker in America knows what it’s like for a company to take too much and give too little. In securing this agreement, IAM Union members have won an opportunity to ratify a contract that would set a new standard for their industry. A contract like this would send an inspiring message to all workers in the United States who are seeking to join unions or who have been shortchanged by their employer. That said, we will continue to stand by the membership no matter the outcome of Monday’s democratic vote on these newly improved terms. We also remain very thankful to Acting U.S. Labor Secretary Julie Su, who on behalf of the Biden-Harris administration has continued to help bring the employer and the members together for productive talks to reach this historic agreement.
If the vote passes, striking workers can return to work as early as their first shift on Nov. 6. Otherwise, workers must return by Nov. 12.
In a statement to IAM-represented employees, Boeing CEO and President Kelly Ortberg released the following statement
Yesterday, we reached a proposed agreement with the IAM bargaining committee on a new four-year contract. I know the strike has been difficult for you as well as for our customers, suppliers, communities and all who work at Boeing.
It’s time we all come back together and focus on rebuilding the business and delivering the world’s best airplanes. There are a lot of people depending on us.
I encourage everyone to learn more about the agreement and understand the facts from the Boeing Negotiations website or your IAM leadership. Be sure to cast your vote on Monday. It’s important that you all participate in this process since the results of the vote will affect all of us.
