Complaint filed to police after baby dies at Makarios hospital
A complaint has been filed to the police after a baby died at Nicosia’s Makarios hospital, according to reports which surfaced on Friday.
According to news website Cyprus Times, the baby girl’s parents have complained of medical negligence, with the baby having died at the age of three months on October 26.
The website reported that the baby was buried without an autopsy, leading her parents to request that the body be exhumed and examined.
The baby was born at the Makarios hospital on July 30 and remained there throughout her life, having reportedly suffered from breathing problems and trouble swallowing.
As such, the hospital’s medical staff performed a tracheostomy – an operation where an incision is made on one’s neck to open a direct airway through the trachea – which proved unsuccessful.
The baby then underwent a second operation, after which she died. She was then buried on Tuesday.
A police representative told the Cyprus Mail they were “trying to learn what happened” in the case.
