On Diwali, NASA celebrated the festival of lights by sharing warm wishes and breathtaking images taken from the Hubble Space Telescope. Posted on their official X account, the image showed the Omega Nebula, a stellar nursery where stars are born. Accompanying the image, NASA’s message read, “Wishing you a joyful #Diwali! Just as the cosmos lights up our universe with endless wonder, Diwali illuminates our homes and hearts.”

Astronaut Sunita Williams’ Greetings from Space

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, currently aboard at the International Space Station (ISS), also sent her heartfelt Diwali greetings. In a special video message, Williams expressed joy in celebrating Diwali 260 miles above Earth. She extended her wishes particularly to those celebrating in the United States, including at the White House.

Her message was featured during the White House Diwali celebrations, where Williams thanked President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their support of the Indian-American community and the Diwali festivities. Reflecting on the festival, Williams shared, “Diwali is a celebration of joy, as goodness prevails.”

Williams has been in orbit since June 6, 2023, following launch on Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft with astronaut Butch Wilmore. Originally set for a short mission, their stay was extended until February 2025 due to concerns about the risks of an early return.

Diwali Wishes From Sundar Pichai

Beyond NASA, tech giants also joined in the Diwali celebrations. Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared his enthusiasm for the festival on Threads, saying, “Diwali is one of my favourite times of the year…always fun to fill the house with light. Wish those who celebrate a Happy Diwali.” Apple CEO Tim Cook also celebrated, posting a beautiful image by Indian photographer Rohit Vohra of Diwali diyas placed atop rose petals. His message highlighted Diwali’s themes of light, unity, and hope: “Wishing everyone celebrating a joyous and peaceful Festival of Lights.”
